McCormick Property Development proposed the establishment of a shopping centre and associated infrastructure in the Maake area, a rural area outside Tzaneen in Limpopo Province, as there was at that stage no shopping complex in the area and local residents had to travel to Tzaneen for most of their shopping.
Polygon successfully undertook a Basic Environmental Assessment (BA) for the shopping centre and a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for an onsite wastewater treatment system, culminating in Environmental Authorisation (EA) being issued for both the shopping centre and the wastewater treatment system.
Polygon also successfully applied for permits for the removal, delimbing and/or transplantation of a few specimens of protected trees on the premises, and another consulted undertook the Water Use Licence Application (WULA) – this was before Polygon expanded our service offering to include WULAs. Polygon also undertook environmental compliance monitoring during construction from 2008 to 2009, in our role as Environmental Control Officer (ECO) for the project.
A full EIA was subsequently also done for a proposed filling station on the shopping centre premises, and EA was issued in 2010 but expired before the filling station could be established. A BA was undertaken for the filling station afresh in 2018, and EA issued in 2019. Construction has not yet commenced and we have received notification of a possible appeal on the EA.
