As part of their corporate social responsibility, Anglo American Platinum funded the upgrading of a small, damaged stream crossing to improve access to the Gamawela community near Steelpoort in the Limpopo Province.
A 30m long, 9m wide paved crossing was proposed, which would be able to accommodate the 1:10 year flood and greatly improve the community’s access to main roads and other towns. Polygon undertook a Basic Environmental Assessment and a Water Use Licence Application, with Environmental Authorisation and a WUL being issued in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
Investigations included a specialist wetland and riparian delineation and functional assessment as well as a heritage impact assessment, and public participation formed an important part of the process. Construction started early in 2019, and Polygon is also undertaking environmental compliance monitoring in our role as Environmental Control Officer (ECO) on the project.
